www.pkr.com – Effective bluffing is not necessarily encompassed by the idea of raising large amounts of chips with absolutely nothing and winning the hand. There are sometimes instances when a player will be close to making a very strong hand but not have anything consolidated at that point. They may choose to ‘semi bluff’ giving themselves the possible safety net of finding a card they need to make a flush or straight if their opponent decides to make the call.
The potential success rate of a bluff is widely reputed to be higher when the bluff is a large bet and the case to be made for this is obvious. Bigger bluffs mean your opponent has more pressure to make the right call due to the large amount of damage they will incur to their chip stack or finances if they make an incorrect call.
Despite this, there is also a great deal to be said for the effective smaller bluffs, which are often very orientated around dangerous board cards showing, meaning stronger hands are available. Provided you have narrowed a pot to a two player situation upon being dealt your hole cards, a dangerous first few board cards, or ‘flop’ as it is more commonly known, can be the perfect time to put in a small raise.
This may seem strange because it will not cost the player a great deal to equal the bet, and as a result you might think players would call this small bluff quite often. However, the power of this type of bluff is not in the size, but in the suggestion it makes. An experienced opponent will always sense danger in such bets, primarily because they suggest that you wish to build a pot with a strong hand you have made, but that you are concerned that you might force them to fold with a larger bet. Consider the fact that if you make an Ace high flush immediately in a hand, the last thing you want to see is your opponent folding and so you bet cautiously to imply weakness.
