www.partypoker.com – Lots of opponents at the poker tables will study some, or all aspects of your play in order to work out how strong your hand is when you are involved in a pot. There are players also, who specifically look for facial expressions or other physical aspects, but for me, this is foolish. Any player who understands this aspect of the game can give false signals to throw someone off who is studying their expression.

I once heard a ‘professional’ player talking about how he always looks for the pulse in his opponents neck to quicken. Well firstly you have to have excellent eyesight to see an opponents pulse from the other end of a table. Secondly, what happens when an opponent is bluffing? Their pulse goes up of course, and what happens when they have a Royal Flush? Their pulse rate goes up.

You can safely say that in poker, the most difficult thing to fake, is your betting patterns. because unless you throw all your chips in every hand, you will be betting differently for a specific reason on each hand. There will always be a thought process behind this, which can be deciphered by a sharp player.

There are other ways people try and get ‘tells’ from players, such as asking them questions in an attempt to get them to speak. For me, you won’t learn anything from this because a person can sound nervous or on edge with a very strong hand, or with nothing at all.

My advice would be to stick to the betting patterns, and learn to unpick the story behind these bets.
