Partypoker.com – Misleading Reads

Posted by Royal Flush Poker @ 12:00 AM, Friday Dec 26th, 2008

www.partypoker.com – Lots of opponents at the poker tables will study some, or all aspects of your play in order to work out how strong your hand is when you are involved in a pot. There are players also, who specifically look for facial expressions or other physical aspects, but for me, this is foolish. Any player who understands this aspect of the game can give false signals to throw someone off who is studying their expression.

I once heard a ‘professional’ player talking about how he always looks for the pulse in his opponents neck to quicken. Well firstly you have to have excellent eyesight to see an opponents pulse from the other end of a table. Secondly, what happens when an opponent is bluffing? Their pulse goes up of course, and what happens when they have a Royal Flush? Their pulse rate goes up.

You can safely say that in poker, the most difficult thing to fake, is your betting patterns. because unless you throw all your chips in every hand, you will be betting differently for a specific reason on each hand. There will always be a thought process behind this, which can be deciphered by a sharp player.

There are other ways people try and get ‘tells’ from players, such as asking them questions in an attempt to get them to speak. For me, you won’t learn anything from this because a person can sound nervous or on edge with a very strong hand, or with nothing at all.

My advice would be to stick to the betting patterns, and learn to unpick the story behind these bets.

Pkr.com – Bluffing

Posted by Royal Flush Poker @ 12:00 AM, Thursday Dec 25th, 2008

www.pkr.com – Effective bluffing is not necessarily encompassed by the idea of raising large amounts of chips with absolutely nothing and winning the hand. There are sometimes instances when a player will be close to making a very strong hand but not have anything consolidated at that point. They may choose to ’semi bluff’ giving themselves the possible safety net of finding a card they need to make a flush or straight if their opponent decides to make the call.

The potential success rate of a bluff is widely reputed to be higher when the bluff is a large bet and the case to be made for this is obvious. Bigger bluffs mean your opponent has more pressure to make the right call due to the large amount of damage they will incur to their chip stack or finances if they make an incorrect call.

Despite this, there is also a great deal to be said for the effective smaller bluffs, which are often very orientated around dangerous board cards showing, meaning stronger hands are available. Provided you have narrowed a pot to a two player situation upon being dealt your hole cards, a dangerous first few board cards, or ‘flop’ as it is more commonly known, can be the perfect time to put in a small raise.

This may seem strange because it will not cost the player a great deal to equal the bet, and as a result you might think players would call this small bluff quite often. However, the power of this type of bluff is not in the size, but in the suggestion it makes. An experienced opponent will always sense danger in such bets, primarily because they suggest that you wish to build a pot with a strong hand you have made, but that you are concerned that you might force them to fold with a larger bet. Consider the fact that if you make an Ace high flush immediately in a hand, the last thing you want to see is your opponent folding and so you bet cautiously to imply weakness.

Pkr.com – Expectations.

Posted by Royal Flush Poker @ 12:00 AM, Monday Dec 15th, 2008

www.pkr.com – Expectations are something we all harbour when it comes to poker, both in the short term, and long term. Some players long term aspirations are merely to keep turning up at their local event and doing well, some want to go on to become world champions one day.

Personally, I would love to go to Las Vegas for the World Series one day and bring home a bracelet, but that is more of a dream than an expectation. We have to be realistic about our expectations so as not to court failure at every turn I feel.
My short term aspirations would be similar to that of many players, in that I want to make the final table and hopefully, top three places, in my local tournament each time I turn up.

If I can succeed in this then perhaps I will look to enter a larger event in order to test myself further. When we do not achieve our aims in poker though, I feel it is too easy to lose heart, but we must remember that poker is partially a game of luck. With this in mind I always try and judge my evening on whether I made good folds and got my chips in with the best hands, and if the answer is ‘yes’ then I played well and should be happy.

Because in truth, although we would all like to turn up at a game and win every week, things never turn out that way in poker, and so the best we can ever ask for, is that we make the correct decisions, almost all of the time. If you can do that, then the rest of your expectations should follow in time.

Partypoker.com Review

Posted by Royal Flush Poker @ 12:00 AM, Monday Dec 8th, 2008

As a first time deposit bonus, www.partypoker.com offers a very reasonable 100% cash match up to an amount of $500. For new players onsite, there is a section detailing the simple steps to get you playing and hopefully winning at poker, and there are also ‘rookie’ only freerolls, which give away thousands each month. Their progressive jackpot for a bad beat will be paid to those unlucky enough to lose with quad 8’s or better, which although unlikely, is still a possibility.

There are many large scale gauranteed tournaments on offer, the biggest of which will be the ‘King of the Table’ tournament. This involves a $2 million tournament, with satellites running to give players the chance of winning their way to a seat. Along with this, there is a $300k tournament which takes place on Sunday every week.

www.partypoker.com has been around for a long time, and as such, is very accomplished and reliable, the help and support options are in keeping with this, and graphically the site has been improved too. Other updates include new features, such as the ‘deal making’ opportunity. This is good in the sense that it offers players the maximum in choice, but generally I do not like the trend of making deals in tournaments. Poker is about fighting to be the last person standing, and making deals in this way, favours the players who cannot play heads up poker.

Skypoker.co.uk Promotions

Posted by Royal Flush Poker @ 12:00 AM, Friday Dec 5th, 2008

In terms of the promotional offers at Sky Poker, their first time deposit bonus is based on the amount of points you earn within your first 30 days onsite. This means that larger bonuses can be achieved by the more serious players, but there is something to be had for the smaller bankrolled players too. www.skypoker.co.uk are also currently offering 10% back on all losses in the other gaming section of their site, so any of the players who try their hand at games other than poker will have a chance to earn some extra money back.

In terms of special tournaments going on, there is a ‘beat the presenter’ promotion going on, giving players the chance to pit their wits against the analysts of their show. This should be enjoyable for players, although it would be nice to see a bounty on the presenters heads too.

Also at Sky poker, there are the usual televised tournaments which offer an interesting perspective on both your own, and your opponents play when watched back. These types of tournaments are one of the key aspects of what makes www.skypoker.co.uk a good site I feel, and it would be nice to see more televised games going on. There is of course the monthly poker league running at Sky too, which offers cash prizes for the most skillful players who can ascend to the top of the league.

Overall, there are certainly good aspects of Sky Poker, and it’s bonuses, but in terms of diversity, I think there could be more from this poker room.

Betfairpoker.com Review

The first time deposit bonus you receive at Betfairpoker.com, is based solely upon the points you earn in your first 60 days onsite. The more you play, the more you earn, with the bonus being released in increments every week depending on the amount of points you have earned that week. If you need a further boost to your starting bankroll, referring any poker playing friends you might have to the site, will trigger a $100 bonus for you, and $50 for your friend.

There is a new high stakes MTT leaderboard in operation currently, which offers the chance to win a lucrative prize package of seats in multiple tournaments onsite.

www.betfairpoker.com is a licensed site with exemplary standards and transaction security, and help and support act with the diligence you would expect too, being available to solve your problems 24/7. The graphics at the tables are functional enough, although not quite to my tastes, but this is not the most important aspect of a poker room of course.

The 7th of December will bring a great opportunity to players, as there is a scheduled $100k gauranteed tournament coming up on this date. This is just one of many gauranteeds scheduled, along with other tournaments at Betfair including 30 freerolls per week, which make up part of what is an interesting daily tournament list. Overall, there are certainly plenty of positives at Betfair, although as with many sites, they should continue striving to better themselves in order to match the efforts and achievements of the best poker rooms around.
